I feel compelled to share a recent experience that I believe will be a source of strength and hope to someone…if not many. It’s far different than what is normally shared on this site, but nonetheless, I think it is worth sharing.
Yesterday, my wife and I had to put down our (almost) 14 year old chocolate lab. His name was Moose and he was an incredibly amazing dog. As we were in our final days of loving on him, I couldn’t help but feel the love of Christ through him. I thought about how amazing it was to have a dog share unencumbered love every day from the moment we began caring for him (love without ceasing). My mind went immediately to Jesus and how he shares and reveals His love for us in ways maybe we don’t fully understand or appreciate. Can Jesus share His love for us through the relationships with our pets? I believe so. In fact, I believe he blesses us with these relationships for that very reason. They are gifts from God and are one of the many ways He is sharing and revealing His love towards us through these amazing animals. He wants us to see and experience, first hand, 24/7 love. There is no doubt that the love our pets possess and share comes from Christ.
Is Jesus saying “I am showing how much love I have for you…if you’d just open your eyes to see it revealed everyday through your dog, cat (and numerous other ways).” What an incredible thing to finally understand (I am a little slower than most, but eventually I get there). Moose wanted to be wherever we were. An amazing loving and loyal friend.
About an hour after Moose went into his rest, I needed to keep busy so as I opened up the gate to our backyard and a Monarch butterfly (new life) flew right up to me, fluttered around for a few seconds, and flew over our fence. What a loving God we have that cares enough to say “Moose is home, happy, and running free”. Praise be to God.
Take the time to ponder the love of Christ and let your beloved pet be a conduit of that love. Maybe some of their love can rub off on us so that we can learn to love others in a similar manner. I think that’s what Christ has wanted all along.
Thank you for allowing me to share my heart with you. I rejoice at this wonderful expression of God’s love. May God’s grace and the love of Christ be with you all.
