A Healing Testimony

God heals today as He always has, and this is my testimony.

One morning over eight years ago, I awoke to a strange new pain in my left wrist, where the base of the thumb connects to the wrist joint. I assumed that I had slept with my hand in a position that had put too much pressure on my wrist, and that the pain would go away in a few days. But the pain did not subside, and the wrist was suddenly weak, so weak that I could not hold a mug of coffee in my left hand. I also noticed that my pinky and wedding ring finger curled inward unnaturally. After a few days of noticing these changes, I asked the Holy Spirit what had happened that crippled my hand. He downloaded the words, “Ischemic Event” into my mind. Since I am not a doctor and this was not terminology I knew, I looked it up. Basically, I had experienced a mild stroke in my sleep, and hadn’t recognized it for what it was. Since over two weeks had passed since the changes occurred, there wasn’t much a hospital visit and medications could do to reverse the damage.

So for two months, I dealt with the new pain and weakness in my left hand. I couldn’t even carry a 5-pound bag of groceries with that hand. Not even my handbag. I was in my mid-fifties, not yet a senior citizen, and this was my new normal. I believed that God could heal my hand, if He wanted to, and though I had repeatedly asked for healing, He hadn’t done it yet. I accepted it and said, “Your will be done, Lord.”

When I heard about a Kickstart event sponsored by a house church and evangelical discipleship movement—the Last Reformation led by a Danish pastor Torben Sondergaard (who would later undergo much persecution)—I signed up to go. The kickstart in Somerset, New Jersey, conducted training of disciples in the basics of healing straight out of the Book of Acts. Sondergaard would not be there, but other Christian disciples who had been trained by him and had conducted street healing and evangelism for years in the United States and Canada would be there.

I attended the event more to witness the Holy Spirit’s healing in action and to learn how it was done than to heal my own body. I believed my healing would come, God willing and in His timing. So in a two-and-a-half day period, I worshipped, fellowshipped, witnessed how street healing and evangelism was done, and practiced under supervision with other trainees on shoppers at the local mall. What I witnessed and participated in expanded my comprehension of what God can do every day with willing disciples stepping up in faith.

In the sweeping staircase of the mall, a middle-aged woman, her teenage daughter in tow, struggled to climb the stairs because of a knee condition. She stopped on the landing, and my training group offered to pray for healing of her knee. As I was the only woman in a group with two men, the male trainer asked me to conduct the healing prayers with permission to touch the woman, so I did. We first prayed for healing of her knee, declaring healing in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. We asked if the pain level was decreasing, instructing her to assign numbers to the changing pain levels. Realizing that healing was actually occurring, she then shared with us that she suffered from spondylosis and pointed to her mid back. I noticed that her daughter, a bit shy and confused, had withdrawn from us and leaned on the banister. So as I placed my hand on the mother’s back and commanded healing in Jesus’s name, the Holy Spirit downloaded information into my mind about the woman’s daughter who needed healing as well. Once I finished with the mother, I walked over to the daughter and shared with her the Holy Spirit’s message. “Jesus knows about your broken heart and the young man who broke it.” The girl’s eyes widened. “He loves you and will restore your heart. He also sees your panic attacks and will heal you from those as well. God bless you and keep you.” The young woman saw how much God knew of her life and cared enough to communicate His love for her.

In the lower part of the mall, we came across a slender blonde woman employee in her fifties holding out candy samples for passing shoppers. After picking out candies, we explained that we were in the mall to pray for God’s healing of the sick. She paused and volunteered, “I need healing. I have pulmonary fibrosis. They say there’s no cure and I’ll eventually die from it.” So she put down her tray, and since she was a woman, my trainer told me to ask permission to place my hand on her upper sternum. While I asked the Holy Spirit to enter her body and heal it from the top of her head to the tips of her toes, focusing especially on her lungs, the two men prayed beside me for her healing. In the name of Jesus, I cast out the spirit of pulmonary fibrosis. Soon her face broke out into a sweat and started dripping. “My lungs are on fire,” she said. “I can feel it.” Then she giggled like a teenager and said something honest but a little inappropriate. “This is better than sex,” she said, and we all laughed, a bit embarrassed by her bluntness. The mall was not the only place of healing that afternoon.

On the way back to the kickstart, one of the men trainees mentioned stopping by a famous Costa Rican restaurant to order takeout. So we parked the car and headed to the restaurant. While walking there, the Holy Spirit told me to pray with a waitress there whose brother needed prayers. Once in the restaurant, I saw at least six waitresses, and I asked the Holy Spirit to show me which one. While waiting for our takeout food, I scanned the waitresses, and the Holy Spirit said, “That one. It’s her.” So I approached her only to find out that she didn’t speak English, so I asked another waitress to translate. “The Holy Spirit is telling me to pray with you for your brother,” I told her. “How do you know about my brother?” she asked. “I don’t know anything about your brother, but God knows about him and wants us to pray for his healing,” I explained. “My brother is in jail,” she told us. “The Holy Spirit is telling me that he has addiction problems and has stolen from people.” She nodded. So together, we prayed for God’s healing of her brother from addiction and his deliverance from spiritual oppression. When we left with our takeout dinner, we left an indelible memory of how God sees everything and cares for everyone, even a loved one hidden away in a jail cell, with every waitress in that restaurant.

I returned to that kickstart meeting a changed person, a disciple activated in new ways. What I personally saw and experienced that day relegated Cessationism (a Christian theological doctrine stating that the extraordinary “sign gifts” of the Holy Spirit—such as speaking in tongues, prophecy, and miraculous healing—ceased with the end of the apostolic age or the completion of the New Testament canon) to the ash heap of history.

And the miracles continued unabated. The next day, after the baptisms (and yes, even deliverances) earlier at a nearby hotel pool had finished, we closed the kickstart, but the Holy Spirit hadn’t yet finished His work there. Most of the trainees had left and volunteers were stacking chairs and cleaning up. Just before heading to the exit to leave, I heard the voices of two men at the front of the room. “Attention! Is there someone still here whose hand needs healing? Please come to the front.” I looked at my left hand, its pinky finger still stuck in the curled position. “I do!” I called out, and walked to the front of the room. The two men held my left wrist and prayed for complete healing of my hand in Jesus’s name. I did not feel tingling, or sensations of heat or cold. But I felt seen by God and loved.

Within 10 days, my fingers uncurled. All pain in my wrist ceased. Full strength returned to my hand. It could lift 25 pounds with no trouble. All glory be to God. Amen.

Commissioning and Authority in the Gospels

Instructions for the Church

  • James 5:14–15: “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up.”
