On 1/24/2021 the Lord gave me a vision of spoons and forks intermingled in the same slot in my utensil drawer. End of vision. At first I simply could not figure out what He was telling me. Then one day, it hit me. He wanted me to write about a time when I was deceived by someone who gave me a “personal prophesy”. The connection between the vision and this false prophet will become clear shortly.
On 9/1/2018 as I was googling, a screen popped up on my phone. It featured a prophetic website run by a woman who I will call Carla (not her real name), who claimed to be a new prophet of God. She said that God wanted her to seek out some people who would give her feedback on her prophesies, so she could hone her prophetic skills. Now what I should have done was to ask the Lord if He wanted me to receive a “prophetic word” from this person, but I didn’t. I fell into the exact same trap that Joshua did when the Gibeonites tried to deceive him. Namely, we both failed to seek counsel from the Lord. What I did do was to research some of her online prophesies. Since they seemed legitimate, I reached out to her and agreed to a prophetic word.
The first red flag was when Carla mentioned that God wanted her to take a class in prophesy. Now, that just does not jive with the Bible. In the Bible, the Lord would anoint his prophets and then the spirit of prophesy would come upon them and they would prophesy. They did not have to go to school to learn how to become prophets. The Holy Spirit that resides in each believer is fully capable of teaching that believer everything he needs to know. God really doesn’t need man to help him out in this area. By the same token, we do not need to go to school to learn how to interpret dreams either. Only God can give us the interpretation of His dreams, not man.
Then Carla told me that when she prayed for me, the name “Evan” kept coming up and did it mean anything to me. Now that got my attention bigtime, since Evan is my cousin’s name. (Note: I changed my cousin’s name here to protect his identity). So I believed at the time that she probably was the real deal. I did not realize then that false prophets often do receive very real information. But that Intel comes not from God, but from demons.
Then she sent me her “prophetic word”. It was a couple of paragraphs long and at first glance seemed accurate. However, one sentence in it bothered me. It was the one where she said that the Lord told her “As I told Mary about her sister Martha, one thing is needful and that is to sit at My feet and bring your worries to me.” Did you spot the deception?
The actual scripture in Luke 10:41-42 says “And Jesus answered and said to her “MARTHA, MARTHA you are worried and troubled about many things but one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Emphasis is mine). So I asked myself, would Jesus tell her that he was talking to Mary when, in fact, he was speaking to Martha? Wouldn’t Jesus know since He was right there? At that point, I knew she was a false prophet. Notice how the supposed Words of Jesus were subtly twisted and do not conform to scripture. These false prophets are often very convincing and that’s why it’s important to know the scripture well. So I send her an email telling her that I did not believe her “prophetic word” and that I did not receive her words in the name of Jesus. And I repented to God for believing her lies.
So now let’s go back to the vision of intermingled spoons and forks. It says in Luke 10:40 “But Martha was cumbered about with much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?” So Mary and Martha were the “servers” in the house. So in the vision the Lord was comparing them to utensils, which are also used to serve. Just like spoons and forks have different functions and cannot be interchanged, neither could Mary and Martha’s names be interchanged. Notice how there was much truth in the “prophesy” but just a sprinkling of deception mixed in. That is how the enemy deceives – with a mixture of both truth and lies. But any amount of lies, no matter how small the percentage, contaminates. Doesn’t it say that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? If what is said does not line up with the Word of God, it is deception. That’s why it is critical to stay in the Word of God daily and to be a “Berean” by searching out the truth of all matters in the Bible. Hold up everything you see and hear against the Word of God to see if it passes muster.
