Is A 48 Year Old Vision To Tax The Church About To Be Fulfilled?

At 3:45PM Eastern Standard Time, Tuesday, November 29th 2022 there was a vote in DC on The Respect For Marriage Act. According to US Senator Mike Lee this now places all non-profits in precarious situations should they decide to obey God and not man and speak out against hedonism, child brides, polygamy and homosexuality in marriage. Risk lossing their tax exempt status.

Under the RFMA’s current language, many religious schools, faith-based organizations, and other non-profit entities adhering to traditional views of marriage would be at risk of losing tax-exempt status and access to a wide range of federal programs. Many small businesses would also be affected. For example, wedding vendors (including kosher caterers) would be subjected to endless lawsuits and harassment based solely on their beliefs.

There is coming an attempt to tax churches and church-related organizations. Atheistic forces, with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union, will push this matter all the way to the Supreme Court. . . . we will eventually have taxation of churches. It will begin as an insignificant kind of nuisance tax, but will soon burgeon into a monster-size tax that will push some independent churches and missionary societies near bankruptcy. . . .

Church-related businesses will be taxed first. That will soon be followed by taxation of all church-owned properties, including parsonages. Church buildings will be exempt. . . .

The IRS may, one day, become one of the most powerful weapons against the church. It would then be possible for government agencies to maintain a stranglehold on churches. Government agencies are soon going to be delving into the private books of almost every nonprofit religious organization. Those who do not comply with stringent guidelines will be forced to shut down — and there will be no recourse. (pg 88)

The “Respect for Marriage Act” violates core federalism principles and threatens religious liberty for those who hold to the timeless understanding that marriage is an institution consisting of one man and one woman. This bill will:

  • Abdicate Congress’ authority to define “marriage” for federal purposes, embracing any state’s declaration that any type of relationship constitutes “marriage.”

  • Force every state to embrace any other states’ definition of “marriage,” however strange or novel.

  • Allow special interest groups to sue individuals and faith-based organizations that adhere to the view that marriage is defined by God as a union of one man and one woman.
