Watchman Warning for Banda Aceh and the Indian Ocean

In a rhema delivered in the wee hours of the morning while it was still dark, the Holy Spirit downloaded the words “Banda Aceh” into my mind. I remembered that in December 2004, this area of northern Sumatra in Indonesia was the epicenter of an enormous earthquake. This quake was so strong that it caused tsunamis through much of southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean, from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand to Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives, and even Somalia. This seismic event—where the Indian tectonic plate subducts under the Burma plate—and its resulting tsunamis killed an estimated 227,898 people in 14 countries. When I asked the Holy Spirit why he would mention this specific powerful earthquake, the deadliest natural disaster of the 21st century to date, He said that another violent earthquake would happen in that same area.

Back in 2004, the Indian Ocean had no tsunami warning system to warn the general population living oceanside, so most of the tsunami victims were taken by surprise. Tsunami detection is difficult because while a tsunami is in deep water, it has little height and a network of sensors is needed to detect it. Today, the Indian Ocean has a fully functioning tsunami warning system called the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWMS). With the many lessons learned from the 2004 tsunami, coastal nations are now more prepared to warn and evacuate their citizens.

But nothing can prepare and protect people from disaster better than God. And that is why He is warning His people now of impending earthquakes in the Banda Aceh area and resulting tsunamis in the Indian Ocean. In fact, after I received His rhema and was slipping back into sleep, I kept hearing the urgency in His repeating words “Banda Aceh! Banda Aceh! Banda Aceh!”
