In a dream vision, the Holy Spirit took me to a small building, and once I stood inside it, the building seemed to grow larger. As I walked further into the structure, I saw single-sized mattresses stacked in piles on sturdy shelving along a wall. I wondered if I was inside a homeless shelter, in the place where it kept supplies. Workers walked around me, but not the homeless people themselves, and they did not see me as I was invisible. The workers were diverse—most were not white—and I assumed this facility lay in a more urban area like Baltimore. I did not know what city at the time, but as I write this the Holy Spirit specifies Detroit.

Then suddenly, the scene shifted, and I was attending a meeting of workers affiliated with the shelter. I remained invisible and simply observed. Some of the workers sitting near me ran a soup kitchen. One worker, a Hispanic woman, stood up and complained to the group about how bad the food shortage had become. The soup kitchen no longer had enough food to give out to the hungry. “We only have enough food for the volunteers who are hungry,” she complained. “We don’t have enough food to give to the people we’re supposed to give the food to.”

When the dream vision ended, I realized that God was showing me how bad the coming food shortage would become in many cities. Even the soup kitchens would not receive enough food donations to feed the hungry masses!

Scripture:

Job 5:20 NIV
In famine he will deliver you from death,
and in battle from the stroke of the sword.

Psalm 37:19 NIV
In times of disaster they will not wither;
in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

Psalm 105:16 NIV

Joel 1:16 NIV
Has not the food been cut off
before our very eyes—
joy and gladness

Amos 4:6-9 NIV
6 “I gave you empty stomachs in every city
and lack of bread in every town,
yet you have not returned to me,”
declares the Lord.

7 “I also withheld rain from you
when the harvest was still three months away.
I sent rain on one town,
but withheld it from another.
One field had rain;
another had none and dried up.
8 People staggered from town to town for water
but did not get enough to drink,
yet you have not returned to me,”
declares the Lord.

9 “Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards,
destroying them with blight and mildew.
Locusts devoured your fig and olive trees,
yet you have not returned to me,”
declares the Lord.

Amos 8:11-12 NIV
11 “The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine through the land—
not a famine of food or a thirst for water,
but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.
12 People will stagger from sea to sea
and wander from north to east,
searching for the word of the Lord,
but they will not find it.

Matthew 24:7 NIV
Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

Luke 21:11 NIV
There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
