As we are now facing looming pandemics such as Bird Flu and China’s most recent assortment of respiratory viruses, I have often asked the Holy Spirit to guide God’s people to natural God-created substances that can help to protect them along with prayer and declaring Psalm 91.

About three months ago, in a word of knowledge, the Holy Spirit downloaded the word, “STILBENE” into my consciousness. The word kept repeating in my mind so it would not escape my attention. The Holy Spirit knows I am not a scientist, and most often I have little idea what these terms mean, so He really has to get my attention. So I asked the Holy Spirit what was so important about this word. But before he answered, He downloaded another word or partial word into my mind—“PTERO”. Do you mean as in pterodactyl, like the flying dinosaur, I asked. Yes, He answered, not the dinosaur but the first part of the word. So I put the two words together, “PTERO” first, followed by “STILBENE” and I got PTEROSTILBENE.

When I looked up this odd word, it actually existed! Not only was “pterostilbene” (PTS) a real word, but it was a naturally-derived substance that had documented health benefits in countless studies and academic papers.

PTS is a natural analog of resveratrol. However, pterostilbene has several advantages superior to those of resveratrol due to its structure. Pterostilbene has two methoxy groups and one hydroxyl group, whereas resveratrol has three hydroxyl groups. Therefore, pterostilbene is more lipophilic than resveratrol, easily increasing oral absorption and rendering a higher potential for cellular intake, and the bioavailability of pterostilbene is increased. PTS has a longer half-life (105 min) than resveratrol (14 min).

Through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, pterostilbene (PTS) regulates pathogenic pathways associated with carcinogenesis, hematologic diseases, neurological disorders, vascular dysfunction, aging disorders, and diabetes. Red sandalwood, also known as Heartwood (Pterocarpus santalinus), was the first identified source of PTS. PTS is abundantly found in Indian Kino (Pterocarpus marsupium), Guibourtia tessmannii, and Vaccinium spp. berries and found at relatively lower levels in the leaves of grapes (Vitis vinifera), in blueberry fruits, bilberries, and in red-skinned grapes, particularly Pinot Noir and Gamay grapes.

Thank you, Holy Spirit, for your loving guidance and protection as we face the plagues of the Last Days. How appropriate that pterostilbene may be found in the very grapevine (“I am the Vine”) Jesus speaks of in John 15:5. Pterostilbene can be found in the red Holy Communion wine and purple grape juice—the Blood of Christ—we drink to strengthen our souls and honor Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for the redemption of the world. Amen.
