As many who read this website know, this servant has asked The Lord for years what natural compounds can help humanity during the time of plagues. To date, I have posted several words on what the Holy Spirit has given me on a range of compounds.
Recently, the Holy Spirit spoke to me the odd-sounding word, “TAXIFOLIN”. When I heard this word of knowledge, I was not thinking about plagues and medicines at all, but simply cooking over the stove, and suddenly the word landed in my mind. Often, this is the way the Holy Spirit answers my questions. My own mind has to get out of the way before I hear a word of knowledge. I wasn’t sure what this compound was, though the sound of the word rang a bell as if I had heard of it before.
Upon researching, I remembered and re-discovered that Taxifolin is a special form of the bioflavonoid quercetin, championed by Dr. Vladimir Zev Zelenko (1973-2022) in his Covid protocol stack as a zinc ionophore. A zinc ionophore is a substance that transports zinc across a cell membrane. Because the cell membrane is fat-soluble and zinc is a positively charged mineral, zinc cannot easily enter cells on its own. Ionophores act as chemical shuttles, binding to zinc and carrying it into the cell’s center. Zinc prevents viral entry, inhibiting viral replication, and boosting host immune defenses.
Quercetin is a naturally occurring plant pigment (flavonoid) that exhibits antiviral properties through three primary mechanisms: blocking viruses from entering host cells, inhibiting viral replication, and reducing infection-induced inflammation.
Here are the specific ways quercetin works:
1. Blocking Viral Entry
- Prevents Attachment: Quercetin can bind to viral surface proteins (like the G and F glycoproteins on viruses like RSV), which prevents the virus from attaching to and fusing with healthy human cells.
- Inhibits Endocytosis: It blocks the cellular pathways (like endocytosis) that viruses hijack to penetrate host cells.
2. Inhibiting Viral Replication
- Acts as a Zinc Ionophore: Research indicates quercetin can transport zinc cations across cell membranes. Inside the cell, zinc impairs the function of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, which is a critical enzyme many viruses use to reproduce their genetic material.
- Disables Viral Enzymes: It directly interacts with viral proteases, preventing the virus from processing the proteins it needs to multiply and assemble.
3. Reducing Inflammation
- Calms Cytokine Storms: Viral infections often trigger the release of excessive pro-inflammatory proteins (cytokines). Quercetin helps suppress the activation of inflammatory pathways (such as NF-κ B), reducing lung inflammation and protecting tissues from damage.
The PubMed article “Quercetin and its derivates as antiviral potentials: A comprehensive review” collects and presents the current knowledge of the antiviral property of quercetin and its mechanisms of action, focusing attention on the major human viruses belonging to families of:
· Flaviviridae (including Dengue, Zika, West Nile, Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, and Tick-Borne Encephalitis viruses)
· Herpesviridae (including Varicella-Zoster and Epstein-Barr), Orthomyxoviridae (including Influenza A, B, C, and Avian Influenza)
· Coronaviridae (incuding Covid and its mutations)
· Hepadnaviridae (including Hepatitis B)
· Retroviridae (including HIV)
· Picornaviridae (including Polio, Coxsackie viruses, Enterovirus D68 and A71, and Hepatitis A)
· Pneumoviridae (including Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Human Metapneumovirus)
· Filoviridae (including Ebola and Marburg).

So, if quercetin has antiviral potential against such a wide range of viruses, why choose taxifolin over standard quercetin? Dihydroquercetin/DHQ/taxifolin is more bioavailable. Its slightly altered molecular structure—containing two additional hydrogen atoms—makes the molecule highly soluble in water. Because standard quercetin has a highly rigid, water-insoluble structure, it tends to precipitate and is poorly absorbed in the human digestive tract. Dihydroquercetin, conversely, easily dissolves in water, allowing your body to passively absorb it through the intestinal lining much more efficiently.
Upon further reading, I discovered how Dihydroquercetin/DHQ/taxifolin’s benefits go way beyond its antiviral capability. According to the PubMed article “Anti-Cancer Properties and Mechanistic Insights of Dihydroquercetin” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40277103/, “DHQ exhibits potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. Given its significant pharmacological potential, DHQ exhibits anti-tumor activity against various malignant tumors, including breast cancer, gastric cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, colonic neoplasms, melanoma, and prostate cancer.”
The richest natural sources of Taxifolin/Dihydroquercetin/DHQ can be broken down into the following categories:
1. Conifer Wood & Bark (Most Concentrated)
These are the most potent sources globally, highly valued for supplement extraction:
- Siberian and Dahurian Larch: The wood and roots of Larix sibirica and Larix dahurica are the leading commercial sources for extracted taxifolin (often sold under brand names like Lavitol or other supplement forms).
- French Maritime Pine Bark: Pinus pinaster, widely used for extracts such as Pycnogenol, is naturally rich in this flavonoid.
- Douglas Fir Bark: Pseudotsuga menziesii is another highly concentrated botanical source.
2. Herbs, Plants & Tree Extracts
- Milk Thistle: The seeds and extracts (Silybum marianum) are excellent sources.
- St. John’s Wort: Contains trace-to-moderate amounts alongside other active flavonoids.
3. Dietary Foods & Beverages
While much lower in concentration than tree bark, eating a varied diet can help boost your intake of DHQ:
- Onions: Especially red onions, which are one of the most prominent dietary sources of taxifolin.
- Grapes & Wine: Found abundantly in the skins and seeds of grapes and muscadines as well as in red wine.
- Citrus Fruits: Grapefruits, oranges, and lemons contain noticeable levels.
- Olive Oil: A highly studied dietary source of DHQ.
- Green Tea: Contains taxifolin alongside other catechins.
Thank you, most loving God the Father and Creator, for Your watchful care of Your children’s health, both our souls and bodies. Thank you for pointing out the parts of Your creation that can protect us from the natural and manmade plagues, both those here and now and those to come. We honor You and worship You and praise You for Your glory. Amen.
Scripture:
Ezekiel 47: 12
12 Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.”
Psalm 91: 3-10
3 Surely he will save you
from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
Revelation 22: 1-5
22 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.
