Start a Backyard Garden this Spring!

"They do not say in their heart, "Let us now fear the Lord our God, Who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season. He reserves for us the appointed weeks of the harvest." (Jeremiah 5: 24)

During World War II, many people in America started their own backyard “Victory Gardens.” It was a great help to their monthly budgets, and a source of fresh and nutritious food for their dinner tables. My grandfather kept his victory garden for many years, even after the end of the war.

If you live in the city and don’t have a backyard, try a window box or look for a nearby gardening cooperative on a vacant lot.

Start with a 10′ X 10′ section of your backyard that gets plenty of sunshine. Remove the turf and extract all of the weeds and debris. Use a shovel to break up the soil to a depth of 12″. Then, work in 50 pound bags of steer manure, peat moss, and clean sand.

Plant seeds or seedlings after the danger of frost has passed. Pray over your plants and speak life to them in Jesus’ name. Ask the Father to protect your garden from predators, blight, and disease. Give preference to raising heirloom vegetables.

In the past, it was possible to grow potatoes using store bought varieties as a starter. Unfortunately, now our potatoes are sprayed with a growth inhibitor that prevents the eyes from forming. There are several good companies on the Internet that will ship seed potatoes directly to your home.

There is a large and powerful company in St. Louis that produces genetically modified seeds for farmers and agri-business firms. Their genetic modification work is a stench in the Father’s nostrils. In the years ahead, He will allow blight to destroy the crops produced from these seeds. Heirloom seeds were used in America for over two centuries, and are still our best option today.

Please pray for all of our farmers and ranchers here in the United States. The Enemy has been targeting them, and many have been lost to suicide. Please also pray for the people of Wyoming. Although it is our smallest state population-wise, it leads the nation in the number of suicides each year.

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (II Chronicles 7: 14)
