Look at Krakatoa and Tambora and Learn

In a rhema word early this morning, the Holy Spirit downloaded the word “Krakatoa” into my mind. I was still asleep, and the word startled me enough to wake me up. I knew that Krakatoa was a volcano in Indonesia that had noisily erupted in the late 1800’s—the sound of its explosion could be heard over 1,000 miles away—and its resulting pollution of the atmosphere could be seen in fiery red sunsets around the world. I asked the Holy Spirit to elaborate further on why He gave me this word, but He was silent, and I went back to sleep as it was still dark outside.
Then while asleep, I heard another rhema word: “Tambora”. Startled again, I woke up and stayed awake. I had heard the word Tambora before, but wasn’t sure if it was a volcano. I certainly did not know where Tambora was located.
So following the prompting of the Holy Spirit, I looked up both Krakatoa and Tambora on the internet. Both volcanoes lie in Indonesia, about 900 miles from each other. I looked up Krakatoa first, and then Tambora.
This is a summary of what I found:
Krakatoa Eruption (1883)
The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait (Indonesia) was a cataclysmic volcanic event that lasted from May 20 to October 21, 1883, culminating in a series of massive explosions on August 26–27 that destroyed over 70% of the island. Krakatoa had a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 6, with an energy release roughly equal to a 200-megatonne bomb. The third and largest explosion on August 27 at 10:02 a.m. remains the loudest-known sound in recorded history, heard up to 4,653 km away in places like Alice Springs, Australia. Over 36,000 to 36,417 people were killed, mostly by towering tsunamis up to 40 meters (135 feet) high that wiped out 165 coastal towns and villages in Java and Sumatra. Ejected sulfur dioxide and sub-micron ash particles lowered global average temperatures by about 0.5°C to 1.2°C for several years. Stratospheric aerosols scattered light to produce vivid red sunsets, blue/green suns, and global “blue Moons” for up to three years. The collapse of the original volcanic cone left a submarine caldera. In 1927–1928, a new child volcano named Anak Krakatau emerged from the water and remains active today.
Tambora Eruption (1815)
The April 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia, is the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history, rating a 7 on the Volcano Explosivity Index. Tambora released an estimated 30–50 km³ to 100+ km³ of tephra, ash, and roughly 60 megatons of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere.
Around 10,000 to 11,000 people were killed directly by pyroclastic flows and local hazards on Sumbawa, while an estimated 49,000 to 80,000+ others died later from starvation, epidemics, and disease. A tsunami resulting from the caldera collapse added roughly 4,600 deaths. 1816 became known as “The Year Without a Summer”. Sulfate aerosols reflected incoming solar radiation, lowering global temperatures by 0.4 °C to 3 °C. This caused severe summer snows, killing frosts, and widespread crop failures across North America and Europe. The gloomy, ash-darkened skies inspired the British writer Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein and the British poet Lord Byron to write Darkness during a cold summer in Switzerland.
Krakatoa and Tambora are Still Active
Krakatoa underwent a major, sustained eruption starting on September 4–5, 2026, sending ash plumes up to 50,000 feet into the stratosphere, generating lava fountains, and causing regional flight disruptions. Additional smaller tremors and eruptions have continued into September and October. Indonesian authorities maintain the volcano at Alert Level III (Siaga), which is the second-highest tier on the country’s volcanic warning scale.
Indonesian authorities have maintained Tambora at Level 2 (Alert) on a 4-level scale due to ongoing low-level seismic unrest, intermittent rockfalls, and active steam fumaroles inside its large caldera. While it has not experienced a major eruption since its cataclysmic VEI 7 eruption in 1815, minor activity—such as small dome formation, minor lava flows, and periodic seismic swarms (including past episodes in 2011, 2013, and ongoing monitoring through 2026)—confirms that the magma system is still live.
Conclusion
After listening to the Holy Spirit’s rhema words, and letting Him lead me as I researched, it became clear to me that God is warning His people of near future severe volcanic explosions, particularly in Indonesia. Eruptions on this scale, in Indonesia and elsewhere, will have a dimming effect, bringing global cooling and a “year without a summer”. As I finished writing this post, I heard the Holy Spirit say, “Look at Krakatoa and Tambora and Learn.”
Scripture:
Psalm 97:1-6
1 The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice.
2 Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3 Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side.
4 His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles.
5 The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.
6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
and all peoples see his glory.
Psalm 104:31-32
31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works—
32 he who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and they smoke.
Micah 1:3-7
Judgment Against Samaria and Jerusalem
3 Look! The Lord is coming from his dwelling place; he comes down and treads on the heights of the earth.
4 The mountains melt beneath him and the valleys split apart, like wax before the fire, like water rushing down a slope.
5 All this is because of Jacob’s transgression, because of the sins of the people of Israel. What is Jacob’s transgression? Is it not Samaria? What is Judah’s high place? Is it not Jerusalem?
6 “Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of rubble, a place for planting vineyards. I will pour her stones into the valley and lay bare her foundations.
7 All her idols will be broken to pieces;
all her temple gifts will be burned with fire;
I will destroy all her images. Since she gathered her gifts from the wages of prostitutes, as the wages of prostitutes they will again be used.”
Nahum 1:5-6
5 The mountains quake before him and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, the world and all who live in it.
6 Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; the rocks are shattered before him.
