HEARING GOD’S PROPHETIC VOICE – Pastor Terry Thompson

HEARING GOD’S PROPHETIC VOICE

Pastor Terry Thompson

October 16, 2018

There are three voices that will come to you in your Christian walk:
1. our own voice which functions from the memory,
2. the voice of the devil which is pushy,
3. the voice of God which speaks with a revelation.

This revelation is something that has not come from our thoughts or memory and it will produce peace in our heart. That is the word of the Lord.
Moses, Aaron and Miriam all moved in the prophetic which means they had the art of hearing the voice of God, but jealousy tried to creep into the family. Aaron and Miriam had a gripe against their brother Moses because he had taken a black woman to be his wife. They challenged his leadership abilities because of his actions, but GOD called them to the tabernacle and challenged them.
Numbers 12:6-8.
“:6. he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.
7. My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house.
8.With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”

Description of a Prophet

God describes the machines of the role of the prophet through this story.
The prophet is the mouthpiece of GOD, he says what he sees and hears in visions, dreams and dark speeches (riddles) after being in the presence of God. As the prophet speaks what he sees and hears, the light of God is exposed to the world, thus activation and birthing the will of God upon the earth. Sometimes rejection of the word of God leads to abortion of the spoken promises.

Elijah the Prophet

It is recorded in 1 Kings 17 that Elijah the prophet spoke into being a drought that lasted three and one half years. Ahab the king along with Jezebel, his idol worshipping wife, brought disrepute on the land of Israel. God had to send a prophet to his people to reveal the root cause of the apostasy in the land.
Elijah killed 450 priests of Baal. Ahab told Jezebel and she threatened to kill Elijah so he escaped for fear of his life.
Then in 1 Kings 19:5 an angel of the Lord came and fed him twice, which sustained him for 40 days. The Word of the Lord came to him and instructed him to stand on the mount before the LORD.
1 Kings 19:9-13.
“9. And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
10. And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11. And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:
12. And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What dost thou here, Elijah?”

Three Heavenly encounters.

1. A heavenly Angel came and gave him sustenance twice.
2. The Word of the Lord prepared and instructed him to stand before the Lord.
3. The Lord God personalized his relationship with Elijah.

Not in the Wind,Earthquake or Fire.
In this case God was not in the;
Wind
A strong wind opened the Red Sea so the children of Israel could escape Pharaoh’s army. Ex 14:21.
Earthquake
Korah’s rebellion was stopped by an earthquake. Num 16:32.
Fire
The Lord spoke through the burning bush to Moses. Ex 3:4.

Hearing the still small voice .

The Lord was teaching Elijah that it was in the secret place, in this peaceful place, he would find strength as he listened to the still small voice. Then he would have a Rhema word to speak against that Jezebel spirit that was contending against him.
Psalms 91:1.
Moses wrote in this Psalm.
” He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

Much activity can drown out our ability to still our hearts and hear what God is saying in our busy lives.

When we need a word from God it is essential to put our hearts in a receiving mode and pull it out of drive just like you would with a car. You are the pupil and God is the teacher so listen.

Quenching the Spirit .

If you allow anger, strife, bitterness, or grief to take control of your lives it will stop you from hearing the prophetic word of God. 2 Kings 2:13-15 reveals that music can clear the confusion that these elements bring! Elisha asked for a minstrel in a stressful time. The music brought peace to his troubled soul which enabled him to be able to go into God’s presence. Time and space is the best healer for grief, but for the other three elements generally repentance is the best remedy.

The Word of the Lord.

When the scriptures talk about ‘The Word of the Lord’ it is not saying that God spoke, rather it is talking about a person.
Who is the Word of the Lord?
Abram said;
Genesis 15:1
“After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.”
Elijah was told;
1 Kings 17:2.
“2. And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
3. Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan”.

King David wrote in the Psalms ;

Psalms 33:6.
“By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.”
The New Testament
John writes in his gospel;
John 1:1-4.
1.”In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”
John goes on to say;
John 1:14.
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us,(and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

Jesus Christ is the Word of the Lord

Jesus was the inspiration of all the prophets both Old and New Testament. He will be ours too!
In the book of Revelation it clearly shows the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Revelation 19:10
“And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Recap.

1/ Elijah was sent an angel to sustain him.
2/ The Word of the Lord instructed Elijah to stand on the mountain of the Lord.
3/ God instilled in Elijah a keener ability to hear him.

Prophecy is only a bye product of a intimate relationship with the Master. The more you use this wonderful gift the more fluent you will become just like anything else in life. The more you use it the more you will be used.
I know this sounds strange but let me say, “Have big ears and a small mouth.” This way you will not be tempted to slip into presumption.

Love Y’all !!!

Keep under the spout where the glory runs out !!!!
