3. The Cup of Redemption: I will redeem you with an outstretched arm.
This is very profound. When I think about this, I immediately remember how our Lord Jesus died on the cross with outstretched arms. His death brought us redemption. The Lord tells us, “In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’”
It also says in Luke 17:15, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, and also my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
4. The Cup of Praise: I Will Take You as My People
Jesus did not drink this cup, but he gave the disciples a promise that in his kingdom he would drink it. There is a promise in this cup: “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will receive you to myself, that where I am, you may be also.”
“And having taken the cup, he gave thanks and said, ‘Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I say to you that I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’”
This speaks to us of Christ’s return for His people, the Wedding Supper of the Lamb, the Rapture. The Lord tells us:
“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.”
Hallelujah!
What a great promise and declaration these four cups hold! We can affirm these words every time we come to the Lord’s table. Let us go with reverence and awe, with gratitude and joy, because He tells us:
“I brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.”
“I will rescue you from your slavery.”
“I will redeem you with an outstretched arm.”
“I will take you as my people.”
Amen.
