It’s Going to Be Like Mogadishu

Just a few days ago, the Holy Spirit downloaded the word “Mogadishu” into my spirit. The name sounded familiar, but I only knew it to be a city somewhere in Africa.

When I asked the Holy Spirit why he gave me that word, He said, “What is coming to American soldiers will be like what happened in Mogadishu.” So I looked up the city to see what had happened in the Battle of Mogadishu (1993) in the Somali Civil War. Under United Nations authority (UNOSOM II), US troops had originally been sent in to Somalia to alleviate famine, and then they remained with other UN forces an additional year to restore order. But when US forces went after the most notorious of the warlords, killing civilians in his clan, Somalis began to turn against the American soldiers in what became the Battle of Mogadishu. No battle since the Vietnam War had killed so many U.S. troops.

Mark Bowden—author of the 1993 book Black Hawk Down, on which the 2001 movie of the same name was based—writes a 2019 retrospective of this battle in Smithsonian Magazine: “Altogether, the 18-hour urban firefight, later known as the Battle of Mogadishu, left 18 Americans and hundreds of Somalis dead. News outlets broadcast searing images of jubilant mobs dragging the bodies of dead Army special operators and helicopter crewmen through the streets of Mogadishu. The newly elected U.S. president, Bill Clinton, halted the mission and ordered the Special Forces out by March 31, 1994.”

I asked the Holy Spirit where such Mogadishu-style battles would take place, He simply responded, “at bases, outposts, and ingresses, especially where American military forces, originally sent in to help, have been seen to have ‘helped themselves’, overstayed their welcome, and are no longer wanted. Look to Syria.”

Scripture:

Proverbs 25:17 NIV
17 Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house— too much of you, and they will hate you.
