In a dream vision, the Holy Spirit placed me in the yard of a house in the country. As I stood there, I looked up and saw three boys sitting next to each other on the limb of a tree. Each boy held a different root vegetable in his hand. The first boy chewed on a potato. The second one, a sweet potato. And the third one, a carrot. I greeted the boys and walked around to the driveway in back of the house, where I saw a bushy tree with greenish citrus fruit.

When I awoke from the vision, I asked the Holy Spirit what the dream’s message conveyed. “Famine is coming,” He warned. “Tell the people to plant and store root vegetables that can grow in colder climates and last a long time without perishing.” He made it clear to me that these root vegetables can also include parsnips, rutabagas, and turnips, not just the standard potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and beets. When I asked him what the green (unripened) citrus fruit was, He replied, “The citrus fruit you saw can survive cold.” Researching such frost-hardy citrus fruits, I came across the Yuzu (which survives temperatures down to 10 degrees F), the Ichang Lemon (5 degrees F), and the Thomasville Citrangequat (5 degrees F).

Thank you, dear God the Father, for looking out for Your children. You are a God of provision. In Exodus 15, You fed the Israelites daily with manna in the wilderness. In 1 Kings 17:4-6, You commanded ravens to bring food to Elijah. In Matthew 14, Your Son multiplied loaves and fish to feed the 5,000. We gratefully accept your help in preparing for the lean times ahead.

Scripture:

Genesis 41:28-30 (NIV)

28 “It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do. 29 Seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt, 30 but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will ravage the land.”

Psalm 37:18-19 (NIV)

18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care,
and their inheritance will endure forever.
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;
in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

Psalm 111:4-5 (NIV)

4 He has caused his wonders to be remembered;
the Lord is gracious and compassionate.
5 He provides food for those who fear him;
he remembers his covenant forever.

Psalm 145:15-16 (NIV)

15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food at the proper time.
16 You open your hand
and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

Matthew 24:7-8 (NIV)

7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

Acts 11:27-30 (NIV)

27 During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.) 29 The disciples, as each one was able, decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea. 30 This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.
